Green ammonia is ammonia (NH₃) produced using green hydrogen (from renewable-energy electrolysis) combined with nitrogen from air separation, typically through the Haber–Bosch process, making it a carbon-free alternative to conventional fossil-based ammonia. To set up a green ammonia plant in India, one must obtain a PESO license for storage, Generation and handling of ammonia, along with approvals from the State Pollution Control Board, Factory Inspectorate, and Fire Department. Details of the ammonia synthesis and storage system, safety and risk analysis reports, fire protection systems, and land/environmental clearances. The main challenges include meeting strict PESO safety distances and equipment standards, handling ammonia’s toxicity and storage hazards, coordination with multiple authorities, and long approval timelines coupled with high setup costs.
